Educators Continue Professional Development (March 2017)
African American History:
Dr. Keith Mayes presented a one-day training in early February for sixth - tenth grade teachers about American History through an African American Lens. The session was very well received with deep discussions around the role of Abraham Lincoln in the abolition of slavery, the Jim Crow period, and the turn of the century. Dr. Mayes is knowledgeable, interesting, engaging, and passionate about all of us knowing our shared history.
Equity Coaching with Jamie Almanzan:
The first cohort of coaches, equity teacher-leaders, and administrators completed its work with Mr. Almanzan in February. Participants shared that their work has been transformed through the insights, questioning strategies, and learning to listen that each person practiced over these two years. An exciting next step is in building a second cohort with Stillwater, Inver Grove Heights, and South St. Paul school districts in conjunction with identification of eligible, but absent advanced placement students through Equal Opportunity Schools work.
